Ultramed Ltd was established by Dr Paul Upton and Alan Sanders in mid 2014 after a chance meeting on a return business flight. Following correspondence and discussions identifying current inefficiencies in the healthcare system, they decided to take matters into their own hands and Ultramed was born. Their first project was the development of MyPreOp, building on Paul’s long standing interest in preoperative assessment having been on the NICE working group in 2002 which established the preoperative investigation guidelines.
Dr Paul Upton Co Founder/ Director
Dr Paul Upton is a former NHS anaesthetist and Medical Director at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust. He took early retirement in 2016.
His NHS career was initially full time clinical work as a consultant anaesthetist with an interest in intensive care medicine. He then moved to part-time clinical work to be able to support the development of the Peninsula Medical School as Hospital Sub-Dean, including leading on the development of the year 5 curriculum.
He became Medical Director at the Trust for 4 years between 2009 and 2013. During that period the Trust moved from “heading for corporate failure” to having a Board to Board meeting with Monitor in its Foundation Trust application journey.
Paul won the 2014 Clinical Informatics Leadership award from the Chief Clinical Informatics Officer’s network.
Alan Sanders Co-Founder/ Director
Alan Sanders, owner of high-end digital production studio Sanders Studios®, has been company director since 2003. With dual studios in the UK, Sanders Shiers has built up a strong reputation and currently enjoys working for clients the world over.
Sanders Studios client list includes prestigious brands such as LG, Phillips, Virgin, The Financial Times and Aerion, Partner of Airbus, creator of the world’s first supersonic private Jet. The studio has also received industry awards including best CGI at the International Mundos Digitales event in Spain, a Creative Circle award for an add campaign run in Germany and shortlisted at Cannes Lion international advertising awards.
In addition to possessing a strong business acumen Alan is Ultramed’s principal creative/ design director.
Dr Nick Michell MyEndo® Clinical Lead
Dr Nick Michell is a practicing consultant gastroenterologist at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. Nick studied medicine at Birmingham University and trained in the West Midlands region before being appointed as a consultant at Heartlands Hospital NHS Trust, Birmingham. He was awarded MRC funding for an intercalated degree in biochemistry, The Sheldon research Award for his MD thesis and was clinical lecturer at Birmingham University 1998-2000. During his early consultant career, additional roles focused on education and training including chairing the West Midlands gastroenterology SpR Training program. Subsequently he moved into clinical managerial roles as Clinical Director for medicine and local MDT lead for upper GI cancer.
On moving to the Royal Cornwall hospital he consolidated his managerial roles as specialty lead, governance lead, divisional director and deputy Medical director. He has completed the NHS Top Leaders program and has supported nation cancer peer reviews, JCHMT educational external assessments, external service reviews and NCEPOD.
Mr Mike Newman Clinical Safety Officer
Dr Mike Newman is a clinician who recently secured a post as an orthopaedic trainee. Mike has always had a passion for healthcare technology and this led him to work for Assura Medical prior to his medical training. During this time he was responsible for creating a centralised SharePoint site for the collection of business sensitive information from satellite offices. He was also a key individual in the completion of the ISO27001 information security certification, and a member of the Information Security Committee.
In 2014, alongside his clinical work, Mike completed a Masters in Medical Physics with his thesis concentrating on the use of computerised tomography (CT) image reconstruction algorithms to promote radiation dose reduction and improvement of patient safety.
James Johnson Clinical Implementation Support
James is a senior nurse at Portsmouth Critical Care department where he has 12 years experience in the speciality. He graduated from Southampton University in 2004 and worked in University Hospital Southampton as a staff nurse in the early stages of his career. He developed an interest in healthcare IT and now specialises in this area alongside his clinical role. In 2009 he had leading role in successfully configuring and implementing a clinical information system in a large critical care department. His work on this project gained him recognition and subsequently a role as a clinical application specialist for one of the worlds largest healthcare technology companies. He assisted in the maintenance, configuration and implementation of clinical systems at hospitals worldwide in his time with the company.
Dr Kawshala Peiris MyPreOp®Kids Clinical Lead
Kawshala is a consultant paediatric anaesthetist at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. She graduated from the University of Leicester, completed her anaesthesia training in the East Midlands, and undertook an advanced paediatric anaesthesia fellowship at British Colombia Children’s hospital in Vancouver before being appointed in Leicester in 2010.
She is passionate about pre-op assessment and had previously spent a great deal of time looking for solutions. Kawshala has led the streamlining of pre-op assessment for the children’s hospital in Leicester. She enjoys being innovative and has a keen eye for developing things. Having seen MyPreOp and realising its potential she then has led the development of MyPreOp Kids working with the Ultramed team.
In her spare time she loves cake decorating and has become the official cake maker for her friend’s and family events, including weddings.
Gill Pipkin Implementation Lead
Gill started her career in the hospitality industry working her way up to be a senior manager and business owner. As such she has had to deal with implementing and managing change in order to respond to customer demands.
In 2009, she moved to the NHS where she has further enhanced her skills in project management, working with groups of staff to implement new practices to ensure systems remain compliant and improve efficiency. Gill loves problem solving, finding innovative solutions to issues as they arise and working with the teams who will be affected to ensure they are fully supportive of new initiatives. She has extensive experience in working with senior clinical and managerial staff to improve patient care processes.
Elise Worrall Operations Manager
Elise graduated with a 1st Class BA Hons in Business Enterprise from the University of Plymouth in 2014, and subsequently went to work in the hospitality industry working as part of an operational team. Elise implemented projects, managed teams and worked towards enhancing the brand image and growing the business’s portfolio of sites.
At Ultramed, Elise is combining her commercial experience and project management skills to facilitate the expansion of the company.
In her spare time Elise loves hand-printing from her home studio, gym-frequenting, cooking and walking her French Bulldog.
Rob Misselbrook Financial Director
Rob Misselbrook is the owner and founder of Mylor Ventures Ltd, a venture capital company based in the South West. Following a short career in the Army as a helicopter pilot, Rob was in a number of venture capital roles in the City for over eight years. He has been involved in a number of successful start-ups and MBOs, and remains a Non-Executive director of BPD Ltd, Audiology Online, and ReACT Ltd amongst others. Rob founded Mylor Ventures in 2013 and since then it has established a track record in the medical sector, particularly e-health. Rob advises the company on its capital raising strategy and other financial matters. Rob is a Chartered Financial Analyst.
Lindsey Davies Business Support
Lindsey graduated with a BA in German and MSc in International Business Management from Swansea University. After graduating in 2015 she returned to Cornwall and joined the world of digital marketing and lead generation, before joining the team at Ultramed.
Outside of work Lindsey is an avid lover of all things Sci-Fi and coffee.
Ellen Romaine Design and Marketing Lead
Ellen graduated with a BA in English Literature from the University of Exeter in 2014, and went on to study a Masters in Illustration at Falmouth University before joining Ultramed as the Design and Marketing lead in 2016. She has previously held positions in sales, content and digital marketing, as well as freelancing as a designer for clients such as the Royal Cornwall Museum, UCL and the University of Exeter respectively.
Ellen’s role at Ultramed combines her disparate skills in copywriting, marketing and design where she works as part of a growing team to establish and expand the company’s image.
Adam Allen-Foord Systems Developer
Adam is the software/ systems development manager for Ultramed
He specialises in problem solving and interfacing. With an eagle eye for detail Adam is constantly refining Ultramed's suite of products and optimising system processes.
Adam has extensive technical experience in digital communication/ interactivity including 10 years streamlining & managing large scale output for printers.
